Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship at the National Museum of Natural History

The Smithsonian’s innovative research-based artist residency program was established in 2007 to bring together Smithsonian scholars and distinguished visual artists. The Office of the Under Secretary for History, Art, and Culture administers the SARF program in collaboration with the Office of Fellowships and Internships. These offices work with Smithsonian museums and organizations to facilitate access to collections and scholars in all disciplines. Fellows have studied not only what is on view in the nineteen museum galleries and the national zoo but also the vast collections in non-public areas, libraries, archives, gardens, laboratories, field sites in the U.S. and abroad as well as storage facilities. Hundreds of artists apply for this fellowship each year but only a very few are chosen.
